Updated . Prices come from vendor pages, checked October 15, 2026.

Prompt-to-game builders are fastest to start with. A real engine plus an AI coding tool gives you full ownership and no ceiling. Here's the beginner setup.

Godot (free, open source) + an AI coding tool

  • Cursor: AI code editor. Free plan; Plus $8/mo, Premium $30/mo, Super $100/mo, Ultra $200/mo. Cursor
  • Claude Code: terminal coding agent. Not on Claude's Free plan; included from Pro ($20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually). Claude Code

Unity's AI tools

Unity is retiring the "Unity AI" name. Its CLI, MCP server and official agent plugin are free and need Unity 6+. The in-editor assistant is included with Pro/Enterprise/Industry plans. Personal users get a free trial, which converts to $10/mo.

When to choose this path

Choose it if you want Steam or console builds, plan to learn real code, or don't want to depend on one platform. If you just want to see whether game-making is fun, start with a free AI game generator.
